Day 20: Great Sand Dunes National Park

The second NP on the itinerary was Great Sand Dunes in Southern Colorado. Neither of us had ever heard anything about this park so it was really cool to drive up and be completely surprised. It was hard to tell how large the dunes are as you drive up, but once you're there it's pretty impressive. The tallest dune is almost 750ft tall!

We decided to go barefoot onto the dunes so we wouldn't have sand in our shoes. It wasn't too cold out so we figured it would be fine, but we failed to account for the stream we had to cross that was fueled by snow melt...

"Warming" our feet back up in the sand. Compared to the ice water this sand was quite toasty and felt great. These selfies were taken back to back facing opposite directions! Pretty cool!

The tallest dune was called Star Dune and you can see it in the picture below. We talked about hiking to the top, but decided that would be a horrible idea since Janella still wasn't feeling well and we didn't have enough time! Plus, the crazy 30mph gusts of wind did make it a lot chillier than we expected! If you look close enough you can see the tiny people on some of the dunes.

Of course we had to take our flag picture! Made sure to have our Colorado pin on this time!

After our time on the Dunes we headed North to Steamboat Springs to stay with my friend Erik. There was lots of good site seeing along the way and a snowstorm + road damage on Rabbit Ears Pass to top it off (Hula Girl handled it though).

Lesson of the Day: Barefoot probably isn't a good idea for any activity when you're sick.
